It has happened just as I thought it might...
I took my daughter to work and my gas light when off. I was in Champaign and I knew I wouldn't make it to Urbana so, I filled up in Champaign and did a little shopping while there. It occurred to me that my prediction had come to pass. If you aren't able to buy something in the town you live in and you live in a unique community such as Champaign/Urbana most likely you are going to go to the nearest location to find it and while there get ALL your errands done... grocery shopping, back to school clothes and shoes and while you at it save $.02 cents a gallon tax on gas.
When the gas tax conversation began I said it was a bad idea and when the vote was taken two other council members also stated their opinions with no votes and so at the end of the evening it passed with 4 ayes and 3 nayes. As one council member stated now is not the time. In C-U I am not sure there is ever a time for a tax like this because of how this town is made up. We have the City of Champaign, the City of Urbana, surrounded by Champaign County. So for example where I live I can drive@ two blocks, and fill up in Champaign Co., and not be charged a $.02 cent gas tax. The comparisons that were given weren't of communities like ours so that is why I believed it was a bad idea to begin with. I didn't receive one call or email asking me to vote for the gas tax but I received many calls and even more emails asking me to vote NO. So, with that I represented the GREAT people of Ward 6 and voiced their NO's! Where will you fill up?
For me the question has been answered by driving my daughter to work in Champaign.
Heather Stevenson is an Alderwoman on the Urbana City Council representing Ward 6.
Stay at home mom of 4. Shelby 18, Erica 14, Chloe @ 12, and Jarrett 91/2. Married 15 yrs to Jeff Stevenson (my best friend). I attend Vineyard Church (Lincoln Ave. urbana). Born to Tim and Doral Johnson June 7th, at Carle Foundation Hospital (yep I am a true "townie"). Being raised in Urbana gives me a unique perspective when it comes to the issues in the city. I consider myself a public servent not a politician. My priorities are Jesus, Family, Friends! (they are who make me what I am).
