The nasty side of UI athletics

Matt Eller and Bud Golden are no longer with the UI football team. That is not in dispute. However, there are differing accounts of what the actual reason for their departure was. Zook on Eller and Golden: "I don't like to see them go, I like for them to stay, fight it out and fight through it" According to Eller's Facebook account, he "...did not abandon his teammates" and was simply told his services were not needed. NCAA athletes have 4 year contracts that are renewable every year. In this cutthroat business, it appears that a nice kid who may well have earned the starting kicking job was simply asked to leave to make room for other bodies. I imagine the same thing happened to Bud Golden (formerly a 4 star recruit out of Cinncinnatti) If Eller's account is true, then I don't really blame Zook for making the decision. He could well be fired if he has too many kickers and too few playmakers. What I don't understand is the need to publicly trash the kids and say something that seems short of the truth.
